Fantasy and suspense author Shawn McGuire started writing after seeing the first Star Wars movie (that’s episode IV) as a kid. She couldn’t wait for the next installment to come out so wrote her own. Sadly, those notebooks are long lost, but her desire to tell a tale is as strong now as it was then. She grew up in the beautiful Mississippi River town of Winona, Minnesota, called the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin (Go Pack Go!) home for many years, and now lives in Colorado.
Tucked next to a pristine lake, the part-Medieval Europe, part-Renaissance Faire hamlet of Whispering Pines, Wisconsin, is a utopia…except for the recent murders.
One month after arriving in the Northwoods, former detective Jayne O’Shea has settled comfortably into small-town life and is making good progress with her task of getting her grandparents’ house ready for sale. Then, the shocking death of one of the carnies rocks the community, and the villagers look to Jayne for help, placing her in an impossible middle ground of not wanting to get involved and needing to ensure justice is served.
When a second carney turns up dead and the newly hired sheriff – more concerned with ticketing tourists than catching the killer – dismisses the death as an accident, Jayne has no choice but to step in. Can she uncover the truth before the murderer strikes again?
DTChantel: This was a really fun and entertaining entry in the excellent Whispering Pines series. This one has Jayne investigating murder at the circus. And who doesn’t love the circus?
I had the added pleasure of enjoying this book in the audio version. The narrator did a wonderful job, which isn’t always an easy thing to do. It really enhanced the story for me. And of course, there’s an ongoing mystery that will pull me into the next book in the series, even though no inducement is needed to want to read this engrossing mystery series with a touch of the magical.
EFinn1: Welcome to Whispering Pines where everyone has a secret; everyone is a little different and nothing is ever as it seems. Shawn McGuire masterfully weaves a multi-layered story that contains murder, mystery, magic, misfits and more. I love the tension between Jayne and Tripp; Lily Grace’s hesitancy to accept her gift, the quietly powerful Morgan, the dark Flavia, the colorful carnies- all brought together in this very rich story. There is something for everyone here. Looking forward to book 3.
